Santa Fe is a city in Spain with 15,157 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and is located in the Vega de Granada , about ten kilometers (as the crow flies) west of the city of Granada , to whose catchment area Santa Fe belongs.
history
Santa Fe (Spanish: "Holy Faith") developed from a temporary army camp that the Catholic Kings set up here in 1483 and converted into a fortified city in 1491 for the siege of the Moorish city of Granada.
The city was modeled on Briviesca, a place in the province of Burgos ; The simple grid system of the streets then became a style-defining feature for many Spanish start-ups in the new world.
The Treaty of Granada was signed here on November 25, 1491 , which marked the end of Moorish rule over the empire and the city of Granada. On April 17, 1492, the surrender of Santa Fe was signed here, with which the Spanish royal couple Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragón granted the navigator Christopher Columbus the right to look for a sea route to India and make him viceroy and Made governor general over all areas discovered by him.
Because of these events, Santa Fe is sometimes considered the "birthplace of modern Spain".
