The Spanish province of Pontevedra is part of the Autonomous Community of Galicia . The province occupies the south-western part of Galicia. The capital of the province is the city of the same name, Pontevedra .

The province of Pontevedra borders the province of A Coruña in the north, the provinces Lugo and Ourense in the east, Portugal in the south and the Atlantic Ocean in the west . The Rio Miño forms the border with Portugal, and previously a section of the border with the Province of Ourense .

The province has 942,665 inhabitants (as of 2019), of which 83,029 live in the provincial capital Pontevedra .

The province of Pontevedra is divided into 10  comarcas and 62 municipalities.

Pontevedra is divided into two parts by the Río Lérez river . Most of the main tourist attractions are located south of the Lérez.

Much of the Denominación de Origen D.O. Rías Baixas is in the province. The Islas Atlánticas de Galicia National Park is also divided between Pontevedra and the province of A Coruña . This region also includes the Galician islands of Illas Cíes , Ons , Sálvora and Cortegada .
