Las Palmas is a Spanish province consisting of the Canary Islands Gran Canaria , Fuerteventura , Lanzarote , Alegranza , La Graciosa , Montaña Clara , Lobos , Roque del Este and Roque del Oeste . Together with the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife , it forms the autonomous community of Islas Canarias .

While most of the 50 provinces of Spain have a provincial representation, a provincial government and a provincial administration, there are only one province in the autonomous communities of Spain ( Asturias , Cantabria , La Rioja , Madrid , Murcia and Navarra ), as well as in the autonomous ones Communities of the Balearic and Canary Islands do not have such facilities.

Through the Statute of Autonomy of 1982, the tasks of provincial representation, provincial government and provincial administration of the provinces of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria were transferred to the institutions of the Cabildos and the Comunidád Autónoma de Canarias . The provinces are also constituencies in electing the Cortes Generales .

The province's land area occupies 0.81% of Spain, ranks 46th among the 50 Spanish provinces. With 2.31% of the population of Spain, the province of Las Palmas ranks 12th.
