Gáldar is a municipality on the Canary Island of Gran Canaria . Gáldar has 24,242 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) on an area of 65.10 km².
Gáldar is located west of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and north of Puerto Rico . The neighboring municipalities are Santa María de Guía de Gran Canaria in the east, Artenara in the south and Agaete in the southwest.

economy
In the past, sugar cane was mainly grown in the area around Gáldar ; today, bananas , potatoes , tomatoes , onions and flowers are grown in the region . In addition, goats , sheep and cattle are raised . Food is processed in several smaller companies. For centuries, the cheese made from sheep, goat or cow milk from Gáldar and its neighboring municipalities of Santa María de Guía and Moya has been known for its quality.
Around 20 percent of employees work in the construction industry, over 50 percent in the service sector. Tourism plays an increasing role.
history
Before the Spanish conquest, Gáldar was one of two capitals of the Canarios , the indigenous people of Gran Canaria, along with Telde . The last Guanarteme tenesor Semidán was captured by the Castilians, brought to Cordoba and baptized with the name Fernando Guanarteme . The place was called Villa de Santiago de los Caballeros de Gáldar by the Castilian conquerors , its patron saint is James the Elder .
