Location of the municipality | ||
San Bartolomé de Tirajana is a Spanish municipality with 53,443 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) on an area of 333.13 km² in the south of the island of Gran Canaria . The neighboring municipalities are Tejeda in the northwest, Vega de San Mateo and Valsequillo in the north, Agüimes in the northeast, Santa Lucía de Tirajana in the east and Mogán in the west. The part of the name Tirajana refers to a tribe of the Canarios (indigenous people of Gran Canaria) who inhabited this area before the Spanish conquered the island.
Geography and climate
The central coast is characterized by its long and wide beaches and the dunes of Maspalomas as well as salty pools of water and a palm oasis .
The extreme north of the coast is rocky and the south of the island is steep. Above the coast, a wide coastal plain stretches almost at sea level, which is widely populated and extends to the mountains in the center of the island. Inland there is a cooler climate and fertile soil, which makes agriculture possible.
The climatic conditions depend on the lee or windward side of the island and are therefore humid in the north. In winter, there is sometimes heavy rainfall and pleasant temperatures throughout the year. The annual average temperature is 15.8 ° C, with January being the coldest month at 12.1 ° C and August being the hottest month at 20.5 ° C. The average rainfall is 307 mm per year.
tourism
On the coast in the south of San Bartolomé there are some important tourist centers on the island. The districts of Meloneras , Sonnenland, Playa del Inglés and San Agustín mainly consist of tourist accommodation. While Playa del Inglés and San Agustín are characterized by their tourist infrastructure, the new development of the Costa Meloneras focused primarily on quality. In addition to modern upscale hotels, this zone offers guests a newly built congress center and a private hospital.
Tourism is currently in a phase of adaptation. Various studies and organizational plans are currently being carried out with the participation of various institutions such as the ULPGC , the City Council and the Gran Canaria government . The aim of the plans is to modernize tourism while at the same time preserving the urban structures and valuable and artistic cultural assets. This includes the construction of an adventure park and a sports center.
