San Agustín belongs to the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and, together with the two southwestern locations Meloneras and Playa del Inglés as well as the neighboring settlement Bahía Feliz in the northeast, forms one of the tourist centers of Gran Canaria called Maspalomas . The townscape is characterized by hotels, apartment houses and bungalow settlements. In 2019 the population was 1,859.
The place was created after an international architectural competition in 1961, with construction commencing in October 1962, on the land of the Conde de la Vega Grande , a Spanish nobleman who owned extensive lands in the south of Gran Canaria (for the history of origin, see Maspalomas # history ).
Up until the mid-1970s, the expansion of San Agustín was dominated by Swedish construction companies and a facility belonging to the Swedish Employers' Association. Swedish presence is still a feature, including a Swedish church and school in the center of the village. Until September 2015 there was also a German kindergarten , Colegio Alemán en San Agustín, in the area of the Swedish School. The day care center has since moved to El Tablero .
Compared to the neighboring town of Playa del Inglés, San Agustín is quieter. There are no shopping streets and little evening hustle and bustle. However, you can indulge yourself in the so-called shopping center (Centro Comercial) .
San Agustín is equipped with a modern hospital called Hospiten Roca .
