Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a Spanish province . It consists of the Canary Islands Tenerife , La Palma , La Gomera and El Hierro . The capital of the province is Santa Cruz de Tenerife . Together with the province of Las Palmas it forms the autonomous community of the Canary Islands .
While most of the 50 provinces of Spain have a provincial representation, a provincial government and a provincial administration, there are in the autonomous communities of Spain that consist of only one province, i.e. Asturias , Cantabria , La Rioja , Madrid , Murcia and Navarra , as well as in the autonomous ones Communities of the Balearic and Canary Islands do not have such facilities.
Through the Statute of Autonomy of 1982, the tasks of provincial representation, provincial government and provincial administration of the provinces of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria were transferred to the institutions of the Cabildos and the Comunidád Autónoma de Canarias . The provinces are also constituencies in electing the Cortes Generales .
The land area of the province occupies 0.67% of Spain, ranks 47th among the 50 Spanish provinces . With 2.18% of the population of Spain, the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife ranks 14th.
