history
Icod de los Vinos was founded by conquistadors in 1496 after the entire island had been completely conquered by the Spanish the previous year. The name derives from Icod , a former tribal area of the Guanches in the area of today's place. The addition "de los Vinos", which emerged from the sixteenth century and differentiates the place from Icod el Alto , comes from the viticulture in the area around Icod in the wine-growing region of Ycoden-Daute-Isora , which began when the place was founded. Due to the favorable natural conditions, the valley of Icod was used for agriculture from the beginning. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the place grew and the most important buildings and churches appeared. In 1676 Icod de los Vinos had about 3000 inhabitants. In 1812 the place was named the capital of the Daute district, which was also decided by the Spanish King Fernando VII in 1826 and finally established in 1833. Since the 20th century, Icod de los Vinos has had the wine, which has been important since the village was founded, and the famous dragon tree Drago Milenario in its coat of arms.
