geography

Geographical location

El Tanque (Tenerife), through town

El Tanque is located about 63 kilometers west-southwest of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and about 36 kilometers north of Adeje . Neighboring communities are Garachico in the north and east, Santiago del Teide in the south and Los Silos in the west. Along with Tegueste and Vilaflor , El Tanque is one of three municipalities in Tenerife without access to the sea.

The municipality of El Tanque has an area of 23.36 km² at an average altitude of 590 m above sea level.

Community structure

In addition to the main town of the same name with 1619 inhabitants, the municipality of El Tanque consists of the districts of San José de los Llanos with 544 inhabitants, Ruigómez with 353 inhabitants and Erjos with 134 inhabitants (as of 2017).

history

The place name is derived from a pond created to irrigate the fields there (Spanish estanque ).

After the conquest of Tenerife by the Spaniards, the place developed from 1540 around a hermitage, in the place of which a chapel in honor of Anthony of Padua was built in 1596 . From 1605 the permanent settlement of the village can be proven, which initially belonged to Garachico . In 1621 the place got its own mayor and was an independent municipality from April 16, 1642. When a volcanic eruption in 1706 destroyed the port city of Garachico, El Tanque was also badly affected and devastated, the population partially migrated. In the following year, construction began on a new church, which was completed in 1729.

In 1909 the place was again hit by a volcanic eruption, but when the Chinyero erupted , only land in higher areas of the municipality was devastated, people were not harmed.

traffic

Since the extension of Icod de los Vinos in 2014, the TF-5 , which has been expanded as a northern motorway from Los Realejos and leads to Santa Cruz, ends in El Tanque . In addition, a mountain road leads over the pass from Erjos to Santiago del Teide , where the TF-1 ( Autopista del Sur ) ends. In order to establish a faster connection to the southern motorway, the TF-1 is to be extended from Santiago del Teide to El Tanque through a tunnel several kilometers long. However, it is unclear when this construction project can be completed, as the island government cannot fully finance the construction.
