history
The name was first mentioned in 1509, literally translated means "the granary" and goes back to the special importance of the place for the local grain cultivation. It was named after the Portuguese Gonzalo Yanes, who was the landowner and leaseholder of the sugar cane factory on the coast a. a. Maintained trade relations with Great Britain. Today the inhabitants live mainly from the cultivation of bananas and not least from tourism, which does not affect the tranquil character of the quiet coastal town. The patron saint of Los Silos is the Virgen de la Luz (Virgin of Light), whose feast day is traditionally celebrated on September 7th with a procession and fireworks.
Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Luz
The first construction of the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church was completed in 1570. It consisted of a nave and the main altar. In 1605 the church was extended by a choir room and declared a parish church. The side chapels and the new main chapel were built in the first half of the 17th century. Extensions were also added in the 18th century. In the 1920s, the architect Mariano Estanga y Arias Girón renovated the ceiling of the nave, the windows and the facade, to which he added a tower. Only the side portal remained from the old exterior view. The style of the facade of the church today is a mixture between neo-Gothic and neo-romantic . Only reinforced concrete was used for the renovations .
