Icod el Alto is a district of the municipality of Los Realejos on the north coast of Tenerife with 3273 inhabitants (as of 2015). The addition el Alto refers to the altitude and serves to distinguish it from the municipality of Icod de los Vinos , which is a few kilometers further west. The place has a church, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje .
geography
The place is outside the Orotava Valley on the Cordillera de Tigaiga plateau at an altitude of over 600 meters above sea level. In addition to the main town, Icod el Alto consists of seven other localities: El Lance, El Dornajo, Lomo Márquez, La Gallinera, El Mazapé, La Pared and Lomo Juan de la Guardia. The viewpoints Mirador El Lance and Mirador de La Corona offer a view of the Orotava Valley. In the west the place borders on the area of the municipality of San Juan de la Rambla , in the east on Realejo Alto.
history
The area of today's Icod el Alto was part of the Guanche Empire Taoro before the Spanish conquest of the Canaries . The farm Casa de La Pared is located in the village, where crops such as potatoes were cultivated as early as the 17th and 18th centuries . In the past, the Camino Real, which connected the towns of Tenerife with one another in the early modern era, passed through Icod el Alto. Since its inception, agriculture has been the economic basis of the place. Today the agricultural town has problems due to high unemployment.

Icod el Alto is on the TF-342 which connects La Guancha with Realejo Alto . The place is connected to Los Realejos and Puerto de la Cruz by bus line 354 .
