Cueva del Viento

The Cueva del Viento (translated: Cave of the Wind) is a cave near Icod de los Vinos in the north of the island of Tenerife . After a series of caves in Hawaii , it is one of the longest lava caves in the world and is considered the longest lava tube in the African continent and the European Union . The cave system has a known length of about 17 kilometers on three levels. The oldest parts of the cave were formed around 27,000 years ago when the Pico Viejo erupted . 120 animal species live in the cave, 15 species were discovered in this cave for the first time, such as the ground beetle Wolltinerfia martini and Wolltinerfia tenerifae . This cave was also rich in fossil finds, such as the giant rat Canariomys bravoi . A small part of the cave with a length of approx. 250 m can be visited. There is an information center from which the cave tours start.

According to a legend, the cave was discovered by a goatherd. She suddenly fell and landed on her sheep.
