Anya-nya

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Anya-Nya , also written Anyanya ( Madi : snake venom ), was a South Sudanese rebel group in the First Sudanese Civil War .

The group was formed in 1955 and emerged mainly from the ethnic groups of Lotuko , Madi , Bari , Acholi and Azande in the southern border regions of South Sudan. The Anya-Nya was supported by Israel with training and arms deliveries; their troop strength was estimated at 5,000-10,000. She fought the Sudanese central government from 1955 until the conclusion of a peace agreement in 1972. This was broken again in 1983, which led to the Second Sudanese Civil War , in which the Anya-Nya formed the core of the Sudanese People's Liberation Army (SPLA) under John Garang .
