Ycoden-Daute-Isora is a Spanish wine region .

The Denominación de Origen is located in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the far northwest part of the island of Tenerife . The status of a DO received the designation of origin on March 9, 1994. The DO includes vineyards in the municipalities of San Juan de la Rambla , La Guancha , Puerto de la Cruz , Garachico , El Tanque , Los Silos , Buenavista del Norte , Santiago del Teide and Guía de Isora .

It was named after the former Guanche kingdoms Ycoden and Daute and the municipality of Guía de Isora. In the Ycoden-Daute-Isora wine-growing region, predominantly white wines from Listán Blanco are produced. This grape variety covers almost 70% of the vineyard area. Viticulture has been documented since the 16th century and Garachico was an important export port for the Canary Sack . By the time of William Shakespeare , the canary sack was already famous. In his comedy What you want , Sir Tobias asks for a glass of this wine.

Other DO denominations of origin on the island of Tenerife are Abona , Tacoronte-Acentejo , Valle de Güímar and Valle de la Orotava .

geography

The total of 1350 hectares of wine-growing area lies at an altitude of between 50 and 1400 m above sea level. Sea level. The plots are extremely small.

Floors

The island of Tenerife was formed about seven to five million years ago through volcanic activity. In the lower areas of the cultivation area there is sandy soils, in the middle elevation area there is pumice and in the higher parts soils with limestone predominate.

climate

Like all the other islands of the Canary Islands, Tenerife has mild temperatures all year round due to the northeast trade winds that develop south of the Rossbreiten . Especially during the day, the air, saturated with sea water, rises up the Teidemassiv. Clouds form at a height of around 1,000 to 1,200 meters, which condense into a fine drizzle when they come into contact with the local laurel and pine forests.

As a result of this, there are various microclimates in the Ycoden-Daute-Isora wine-growing region. A dry and poor climate predominates near the coast up to an altitude of 550 m. The vineyards at an altitude of 550 to 1200 m (up to the level of the clouds), the climate is cooler and more humid. Growing conditions are drier again above 1200 m. At cooler temperatures, the temperature differences between day and night are more pronounced and are beneficial for the cultivation of structured white wines. Light frost in winter is not uncommon at this altitude.
