List of grape varieties

Malvasia di Sardegna is a white wine variety and one of many varieties from the Malvasia family in Italy. The variety is very old. The synonym Uva Greca suggests that it was imported by the Greeks. The cultivation of the variety is recommended or approved in all provinces of Sardinia . The island also gave the variety its name.

The late-ripening variety is moderately vigorous and delivers weak to medium yields. The must makes a pleasant white wine with its own character. The wines are included in the DOC wines Malvasia di Bosa , Malvasia delle Lipari and Malvasia di Cagliari . The forested area was around 810 hectares in the early 1990s.

In 2006, scientists from Italy, Spain and Croatia published the results of a DNA analysis that showed that Malvasia di Sardegna is identical to Malvasia di Lipari, Greco di Gerace, Malvasia de Sitges and Malvasia Dubrovacka. Proof of ancestry from Greece has not yet been provided.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy whitish and has a crimson tinge. The yellowish young leaves are hairy like a cobweb and spotted bronze (anthocyanin spots).
  • The leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented. The stalk bay is lyrea-shaped open. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are medium-sized compared to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is hardly blistered.
  • The cylindrical to cone-shaped grape is medium-sized and moderately dense. The slightly oval berries are medium-sized and golden yellow in color. The berries are juicy and slightly aromatic.

Maturity: matures approx. 30 days after the Gutedel and belongs to the grape varieties of the middle third maturation period (see the chapter in the article grape variety). It is therefore considered to ripen late.
