The Orotava valley gives it its name . The two Listán grape varieties Listán negro and Listán blanco are mainly grown in the Valle de La Orotava wine-growing region. The two varieties occupy almost 90% of the vineyard area.

Other DO denominations of origin on the island of Tenerife are Abona , Tacoronte-Acentejo , Valle de Güímar and Ycoden-Daute-Isora .

geography

The 700 hectare wine-growing region is at an altitude of between 275 and 680 meters above sea level. Sea level. The plots are extremely small.

The Valle de la Orotava is an area that was created by a tectonic rupture. The term “valley” is a bit misleading given a dimension of approx. 10 × 11 kilometers. The Valle de la Orotava runs from the sea up to an altitude of almost 2,000 meters to almost the beginning of Las Cañadas. The Orotava Valley is closed off in the west like a wall by the enormous “Ladera de Tigaiga”. With the “Ladera de Santa Ursula”, the valley is also bordered in the east by a steeply rising edge. These are the torn-off edges ("amphitheater") of a huge avalanche of debris .

Floors

The island of Tenerife was formed about seven to five million years ago through volcanic activity. In the lower areas of the cultivation area there is sandy soils, in the middle elevation area there is pumice and in the higher parts soils with limestone predominate.

climate

Like all the other islands of the Canary Islands, Tenerife has mild temperatures all year round due to the northeast trade winds that develop south of the Rossbreiten . Especially during the day, the air, saturated with sea water, rises up the Teidemassiv. Clouds form at a height of around 1,000 to 1,200 meters, which condense into a fine drizzle when they come into contact with the local laurel and pine forests.

Due to this fact, various microclimates exist in the Valle de la Orotava wine-growing region. A dry and very warm climate predominates near the coast up to an altitude of 550 m. The vineyards at an altitude of 550 to almost 700 m, the climate is cooler and more humid.
