Roque del Este ( German  "rock in the East" ) is a small uninhabited rocky island of politically to Spain belonging to the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean . It belongs to the Chinijo archipelago north of Lanzarote and is administered there by the municipality of Teguise .

The easternmost island of the Canaries, only six hectares in size, is twelve kilometers northeast of Lanzarote.

There is a steep and very narrow from the Atlantic projecting Stratovolcano with a length of about 570 meters and 84 meters above the sea level.

In the northeast there is the so-called El Campanario ("bell tower") as a striking rock formation . Nearby there is the underwater entrance to a cave about 100 meters long.

Like the entire Chinijo archipelago, Roque del Este has been part of the nature reserve called Parque Natural del Archipiélago Chinijo since May 1986 .

Within this natural park, the island, with the neighboring islands of Montaña Clara and Roque del Oeste , has been specially protected since 1994 as the Reserva Natural Integral de los Islotes . The protection of this zone is higher than that of the rest of the natural park, so that entering the Roque del Este is strictly forbidden, although you could dock with a boat at a point, the La Cueva , when the sea is not rough .

In the mentioned 100 meter long cave below the water level there is a rich marine fauna with some rare and partly endemic species.

The Roque del Este is also a refuge and breeding area for sea birds.
