The rock in front of the town of Garachico |
Roque de Garachico is a small volcanic rock island 300 meters off the coast of the town of Garachico on Tenerife . It belongs to the urban area of Garachico and is a landmark of the city. The island, up to 77 meters high, rises steeply from the sea, with some almost vertical rock walls. It extends from north to south over 284 meters and is up to 169 meters wide, with an area of five hectares .
The rock consists of volcanic basalt streams and was separated from the island of Tenerife due to coastal erosion. The vegetation is sparse, euphorbias predominate . Its rugged walls are breeding and retreat areas for endangered seabirds such as the shearwater , the Bulwer's petrel and the Madeira wave runner , as well as various migratory birds . The rock is also home to the rare Canary Island gecko .
Roque de Garachico has been protected as a natural monument (Monumento natural) since 1987 .
