history
On the southern outskirts of Schmalenfleth, north of the road to Golzwarden, there is a so-called Jedutenhügel . This is 4.2 meters high and about 30 meters in diameter. In the area of today's Brake, Schmalenfleth was the first place to be mentioned as early as the 9th century. In the biography of Bishop s Willehad from Bremen around 860, a woman from "Scmalonfleet" is mentioned, who belonged to Rüstringen . Presumably Schmalenfleth was already during the Frisian conquest of the 7./8. Century. Schmalenfleth has an extension called Schmalenfletherwurp. In 1371 two Frisian chiefs paid homage to the city of Bremen. It is said that in 1517 an "Erich von Schmalenfleth" set out on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain . A school in Schmalenfleth is documented for 1637. The school building was rebuilt in 1849. The school closed in 1961. The famous organ builder Arp Schnitger , who was born here on July 2nd, 1648, comes from Schmalenfleth .
