history

Early days

Jedutenhügel in Schmalenfleth

During excavations in Golzwarderwurp in 1934 traces of settlements from the 2nd century BC were found. Chr. Found. Based on the findings, it was also possible to conclude that the early settlers had kept livestock. In the course of time, the rising water level led to the area being deserted in the 4th century AD and increasingly silting . A Jedutenhügel in Schmalenfleth is also an indication of early settlement in this area.

middle Ages

The neighboring settlement of Schmalenfleth was first listed in writing in 860. Golzwarden was mentioned in a document together with Boitwarden in 1139: as Godeleswere in connection with the Paulikloster in Bremen . With the foundation charter of the cathedral provost Otto von Bremen , Golzwarden became an independent parish in 1263 , which also included the towns of Schmalenfleth and Boitwarden. The St. Bartholomew's Church was built in the late Romanesque style on the high village mound built. It was given a fortified tower , and a trench was dug all around and a wall was built up. In this way, the house of God also served as a place of refuge, both in the event of a storm surge and enemy attack. During fighting in 1375, however, the church almost burned down.

15th and 16th centuries

1408 was Count Christian VI. of Oldenburg captured by the Bremen in the battle of Golzwarden ; six years later they besieged and captured the fortress-like church. The rule of Bremen ended as early as 1424. The Frisians had the upper hand again, but had to defend themselves against frequent attacks from Oldenburg. With the victory of the Oldenburg over the Frisians in 1514, the Frisian freedom ended . The defense tower next to the church was demolished and the rubble was used to build a bell tower. The Oldenburg built a castle in Ovelgönne to secure the newly conquered area ; from there the bailiffs were monitored and administered by the Drost . The settlement around the castle belonged to the parish of Golzwarden until 1809.

17th to 19th century

In 1648 the organ builder Arp Schnitger was born in Schmalenfleth ; his baptism took place on July 9 of the same year in the St. Bartholomew Church. The baroque organ in this church was not built by Schnitger, but extensively repaired by him in 1697/98.

20th century

In the course of the Oldenburg administration reform, the Golzwarden community was dissolved in 1933 and assigned to the new Ovelgönne community. On March 1, 1974 Golzwarden was reclassified to the town of Brake (Unterweser).

In July 1999 the Arp Schnitger Society was founded in Golzwarden .
