history
Since 1860 the then Puerto de Cabras (today's Puerto del Rosario) is the island capital. It replaced Antigua , which it had only been temporarily since 1834. Before that it was since the Spanish conquest by Jean de Bethencourt the place Betancuria . The name Puerto del Rosario has only been around since the 1950s. The name Puerto de Cabras ( Goat Port ) was renamed Puerto del Rosario ( Port of Rosary ), after the church in the village. The valley south of the capital is still called Barranco de Cabras today .
The place was founded in the 18th century. Before that, nobody lived here on the coast for fear of pirate attacks. At the end of the 19th century, English merchants ensured the city's first prosperity. The trade in burnt lime on the island began. In addition, fuel was scarce on Fuerteventura, so English coal was imported. Further trade was made in the island-bred cochineal louse. It gave the coveted red dye carmine . With the new commercial port, Puerto de Cabras quickly became the largest town on the island. By the beginning of the 20th century, however, the port town was already in bloom. In the 1930s Fuerteventura had become a place of exile. In 1924 the Spanish writer Miguel de Unamuno was banished to Puerto de Cabra . After four months, however, he fled to France with the help of others.
Today Puerto del Rosario is the administrative center of the municipality of the same name and at the same time the entire island of Fuerteventura. There is a museum in the building where the writer Miguel de Unamuno lived. It shows what life was like on Fuerteventura at that time.
traffic
The international airport Fuerteventura ( Aeropuerto del Matorral ) is located just south of the capital . Scheduled and charter flights to many European countries are handled here. In addition, the regional planes operate here to the neighboring islands.
The seaport is the largest transshipment point on the island. On September 22, 2007 it became the official Schengen port . Thereafter, border controls were set up for leaving and entering the European Union . This has an impact on the island's economy and on some shipping lines. The occasion was the new direct ferry connection to the Moroccan port of Tarfaya , which has been operated by the shipping company Naviera Armas since the beginning of 2008 . However, this was interrupted for an indefinite period when the car ferry Assalama sank off Tarfaya on April 30, 2008.
