At the Battle of Tamacite, a British expeditionary force advanced to Tuineje and plundered what is now Gran Tarajal . With the help of a few dromedaries as living shields and armed with a few rifles, some farmers who had been warned by their mayor managed to beat half of the outnumbered, well-armed intruders on the Montaña de Tamacite and to drive them to flight. Besides other weapons, two cannons were captured that now adorn the entrance of the Betancuria Island Museum . This event went down in history as the Battle of Tamacite .
