Vila do Bispo (German: small town of the bishop) is located in the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina , a nature reserve that stretches along the entire south-west Portuguese coast. history

At the nearby Vale Boi site , which was discovered in 1998, traces were found that possibly go back to the Neanderthals , in any case to the Upper Palaeolithic . The excavations carried out from 2000 onwards showed that the oldest finds so far can most likely be assigned to the Moustérien , while more recent finds from the Solutréen and the Gravettien are dated . The oldest Gravettia find was dated to 24,300 ± 205 BP.

The first traces of rural settlement in the district go back to the Neolithic Age . Not far from the village there are a number of menhir groups, such as on Monte dos Amantes (Mountain of Lovers) or on the road between Raposeira and Praia da Ingrina.

Romans lived here later. With the conquest by Berbers and Arabs from 711, descending Moors introduced Mediterranean techniques to agriculture and fishing.

The first Portuguese documents about what was then the village of Santa Maria do Cabo date from the 14th century, including a decree from King Alfonso IV from 1353. The place was given to the Bishop of Faro by King Manuel I at the beginning of the 16th century given, and was given the name Aldeia do Bispo ( Portuguese for: village of the bishop). In 1662 King Pedro II made the place the seat of a separate district and elevated it to a small town ( Vila ). Since then the place has had its current name.
