The Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe chapel is a single-nave sacral building near Raposeira in the district of Vila do Bispo in the western Algarve . It was built in the 13th century by members of the Order of Christ . It is the oldest preserved sacred building in the Algarve.

history

The small church can be classified as an early Gothic building, as cross ribs already support the vaults . The architecture has some peculiarities, so asymmetry not only determines the west facade , but also characterizes the overall architecture. It is believed that this was done on purpose so as not to compete with God's perfection.

The church stands lonely in the landscape, only an outbuilding is in sight. The chapel has been plundered several times in its history, meanwhile the entire non-permanently installed inventory, including the naming Madonna sculpture, has disappeared. Finally, the sandstone entrance stairs were stolen. In the 1990s, the chapel was extensively renovated and a museum was set up in the outbuilding, which tells of the history of the Algarve and the seafaring of the Portuguese. Henry the Navigator is said to have stopped and prayed here very often , coming from Sagres or traveling there. Since 1998, both buildings can be viewed for a small fee.

The chapel is a listed building .
