São Brás de Alportel is a small town ( vila ) and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal . On June 30, 2011, the city had 10,662 inhabitants on an area of 153.4 km².

The São Brás de Alportel district consists only of the parish ( Freguesia ) São Brás. The place São Brás de Alportel is the seat of the district ( Município ). The neighboring areas are (starting clockwise in the north): Tavira , Olhão , Faro and Loulé .
history
Finds prove the presence of humans since the Paleolithic . From the 2nd century BC Romans lived here . In addition to excavations of tombs, a villa and other buildings, parts of a Roman road have been preserved, which can be visited as Calçadinha Romana (English: Roman pavement).
The Moors settled here from at least the 11th century, such as excavations and the like. a. from Arab estates, and finds of pottery and coins. In the course of the Reconquista , the place called Xanbras by the Arabs fell to the Kingdom of Portugal in 1249 . Not much is known about São Brás during the following period. In 1518 it became the seat of an independent municipality. In connection with the move of the bishopric from Silves to Faro in 1581 , the bishop had an episcopal palace built in São Brás ( Portuguese : Paço Episcopal ).
In the 19th century, the local cork production gained some importance and enabled the town to flourish. From then on, São Brás was considered to be one of the most important international production facilities for cork . In 1914 , the municipality of São Brás, which had previously belonged to Faro, became the seat of a separate district called Alportel. Since then, the place has borne its name in its current form.
economy
To this day, the production and processing of cork is an essential factor. This is where the corks for the Moët & Chandon champagne bottles are made. Agriculture represents the main economic area in the district, especially carob , figs , almonds and olive trees with olive oil production . The strawberry tree used to make the medronhos , a traditional schnapps specialty of the region, should also be mentioned. The limestone and breccia quarries in the district also contribute to the local economy .
The tourism has, off the beaten track of the famous Algarve won -Beaches, important. In particular , it is practiced here as natural individual tourism, for example to the hiking trails of the Rota da Cortiça (English: cork hiking route ), to the almond blossom, to gastronomic events or as a relaxing holiday in facilities of the rural tourism .
traffic
The national road N2 leads to junction no. 14 ("Faro / Estoi") of the A22 motorway (also known as the Algarve motorway), 8 km south , and further to the district capital Faro, which is around 15 km south . There is also the closest railway connection to the Linha do Algarve and Faro international airport .
Local public transport in the district is ensured by three city administration bus routes that start from the central market hall ( Mercado Municipal ). In addition, private bus lines offer regional and national bus connections.
Sports
The first men's team of the football department of the União Desportiva e Recreativa Sambrasense club, founded in 1970, plays its home games at Campo de Futebol Sousa Uva in São Brás de Alportel. In the 2013/14 season she played in the top division of the Algarve Football Association for promotion to the lowest national division, the Campeonato Nacional de Seniores (3rd division).
The football department of the Grupo Desportivo Cultural Machados , founded in 1990 , from the village of Machados, takes part in the game operations of the district association of the Algarve.
From 6 to 9 September 2013, São Brás de Alportel Portuguese championships (found Taça de Portugal ) in the downhill - mountain bike race instead.

The Arab poet and statesman Muhammad ibn Ammar (1031-1086) was possibly born in Xanbras (today's São Brás de Alportel) and only registered in Xilb (today Silves ). The admiral and historian Gago Coutinho (1869–1959), who became world-famous as a high-flyer in the Atlantic in 1922 , was probably born here and only registered in Lisbon.
