Hamma is a district of the rural community of town Heringen / Helme in the Thuringian district of Nordhausen .
Geographical location
Hamma is just 11 km southeast of the district town of Nordhausen . It is located on the northern roof of the Windleite ridge with the Wernsberg mountains south of the village (Gartenberg; max. 347.8 m above sea level ); Beyond that, the Hammaer Steinberg ( 360.2 m above sea level ) rises at the boundary of the district . To the north of the village lies the Goldene Aue lowland landscape, through which the Helme flows . The Hamma Bach , a tributary of the flood ditch, flows through the village itself .
history
The name of the place is probably derived from the Old High German hamma , which in toponyms means "angle", "angular region on rivers" or "bay".
It was first mentioned in a document in 1143.
During the war of liberation against the French in 1813, many people from Hamma lost their belongings when Russian troops camped between Hamma and Auleben . In 1917 a severe storm damaged numerous buildings, but many fires during that time also caused severe damage.
As a result of the land reform in 1945, many private farmers were incorporated into LPGs , mainly based on crop and animal production. In 1991 the LPGs had to file for bankruptcy. Since then, many residents of Hamma have been commuters, mainly to Heringen / Helme and Nordhausen .
On December 1, 2010, the city of Heringen / Helme and the communities of Auleben , Hamma, Uthleben and Windehausen merged to form the new rural community of Heringen / Helme.
