The wind deflector is one to 374.4  m above sea level. NHN high and around 50 km² mountain range near Sondershausen in the districts of Nordhausen and Kyffhäuser in Thuringia ( Germany ).

Geographical location

The Windleite is located north of the valley of the Wipper located Sondershausen , the county seat of Kyffhäuser circle. It is also located south of the Heringen in the Golden Aue through which the Helme flows , where the Kelbra reservoir spreads out. Wipper and Helme are western tributaries of the nearby Unstrut .

Large parts of the Windleite, the Kyffhäuser Mountains adjoining it to the east and the Hainleite to the south, beyond the Wipper , cover the area of the Kyffhäuser Nature Park ; The landscapes of the mountains, however, extend beyond the park boundaries - especially as part of the Hainleite towards the west.

The wind deflector, which runs largely in an east-west direction, is crossed in its western part by the federal highway 4 leading to Erfurt from north-west to south -east from the Harz Mountains - crossing the federal autobahn 38 laid out north of the ridge in a west-east direction .

Geology and landscape

The predominant type of rock in the Windleite is the red sandstone . Characteristic tree species of the densely wooded mountain range are beeches and oaks. The Windleite is cut through by several valleys (Brückental, Schersental, Hammatal and Östertal).

Climate and waters

Although the Windleite shall be designated from the climate as dry rather (because it is in the lee of the resin), lie in the south area of the main valleys larger ponds: in Hammatal the Hamma pond in Brückental the Pfaffenteich and Schersental the Schersenteich. These still waters are used by anglers because of the abundance of fish.

Migratory birds

As an important resting place for numerous migratory birds, the Golden Aue is of international importance. Thousands of cranes use this wetland with the Aulebener fish ponds and the Helme reservoir on the passage for feeding every autumn .

Mountains and elevations

The highest elevation of the wind deflector is the Zimmerberg ( 374.4  m above sea  level ). The Sondershausen training area used to be located from its summit to the south-southeast .

Tourism and hiking

The Windleite itself offers hardly any tourist attractions, but it is a popular hiking area, as you can relax in quiet forests and the hiking trails are hardly demanding. However, the occurrence of numerous orchid species and geological eruptions, such as in the Schersental, are remarkable. Sondershausen Castle is in Sondershausen, which is known for its musical tradition (Lohorchester) .
