The dam Kelbra behind which the also detention basin Kelbra said reservoir Kelbra located, is a built from 1962 to 1966 dam on the helmets in Saxony-indication ( Mansfeld-Südharz ). Your reservoir / flood retention basin , also located in Thuringia ( Nordhausen district and Kyffhäuserkreis ) with small parts, is around 6  km² in size.

Geographical location

The barrage of the Kelbra dam is located at the northwest end of the Kyffhäuser Mountains between Auleben in the west, Görsbach in the northwest and Badra in the southwest (all in Thuringia) and Bösenrode in the north, Berga in the northeast and Kelbra in the east (all in Saxony-Anhalt). It is located in the Goldenen Aue between Nordhausen (Thuringia) in the west and Sangerhausen (Saxony-Anhalt) in the east . Their dam accumulates the water of the helmets, which flows into the reservoir in the northwest and leaves it in the northeast. Part of the water from the Helm is directed as a northern flood into the Sielgraben , which flows into the Thyra immediately below the dam . The Thyra itself flows 180 m below (east) the outlet structure into the helmets. Around 1 km south-southeast of the Helmeaus river, the reservoir is also drained by the former Solgraben . The Numburg Cave is located at the northern foot of the Kyffhäuser Mountains near the southern bank of the reservoir / flood retention basin .

purpose

The Kelbra dam was built to protect against flooding and, through its flood retention basin / reservoir, serves to absorb the amounts of water flowing out of the Harz into the southern Harz foreland via the helmets and their tributaries ; the reservoir is used for irrigation , fishing and recreation. The lake and the designated floodplain to the west have formed the Ramsar protected area 176 Helmestausee Berga- Kelbra since 1978 , with a size of 14.53 km 2, which is located in the southwest with the combined Natura 2000 area Kyffhäuser-Badraer Schweiz-Solwiesen (ID 4632 -302) overlaps. The reservoir and the flood retention basin are jointly and cooperatively controlled by the Thuringian long-distance water supply and the dam operation of Saxony-Anhalt.

dam

The main dam of the Kelbra dam is located in Saxony-Anhalt south of Berga and west of Kelbra and the secondary dam is located east of Auleben and southwest of Berga; the latter extends at its southwest end to Thuringia. Both dams consist of earth and gravel and cohesive soil. They have an inclined inner seal made of clay on the water side. The crown of the main dam, which is 12.7 m high above the foundation base, is 4,066 m long and 7 m high above the valley floor ; the acute-angled secondary dam is 3,379 m long.

Reservoir

The Kelbra reservoir is located on the Helme behind the Kelbra dam at the northwestern foot of the Kyffhäuser Mountains. It spreads in the Golden Aue mainly in the Saxony-Anhalt district of Mansfeld-Südharz. Small parts of the reservoir in the southwest and south, which are located on the seam line between the Kyffhäuserkreis and the Nordhausen district, are in Thuringia.

Initially, only a green - i.e. normally dry - flood retention  basin was planned for the dam . However, a main dam was then built to create a permanent reservoir, and a secondary dam to contain a basin that would absorb the masses of the Helm river system in the event of a flood. So there are now two basins lying next to each other, of which the lower one is in permanent damming - i.e. as a permanent reservoir - when the lake is at 155.25  m above sea level. NHN has 12.3 million  m³ of storage space and an area of around 6 km²; it is at most 5.5 m deep and 3.8 km long. The upper basin, which lies west to north-west above the secondary dam and adjoins the west and north-west banks as arable and pasture areas, is only dammed in the event of a flood. Together, the two basins have 35.6 million m³ of storage space, of which 23 million m³ serve as a flood protection area.

After the trial jam was completed, which lasted until 1969, the dam was officially put into operation.

On the reservoir, which is largely usable for tourist purposes, there are opportunities for sailing and windsurfing , a textile and nudist beach, camping site , boat rental, a water slide and various restaurants and other facilities near the reservoir.

Internationally significant bird life

The reservoir is of international importance due to its bird diversity, which in terms of species and number of individuals exceeds that of comparable bodies of water. Ducks (e.g. mallard, teal, pochard ), waders ( lapwing , common snipe , redshank , curlew ), divers (crested grebes, dwarf grebes, black-necked grebes ), rails ( water rail , coot ), mute swan are reliable here , Black-headed gull and bittern (little bittern and great bittern ). But sea eagles , ospreys , peregrine falcons and cormorants can also be found here. The diversity of birds during the migration is particularly impressive , when up to 17,000 cranes rest at the reservoir and large swarms of larks and finches pass through. Since 1978 the reservoir has been protected by the Ramsar Convention as an internationally important refuge for birds .
