Numburg Cave

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Numburg cave is the largest cave in the Kyffhäuser area on the south bank of the Kelbra dam on the northern edge of the Kyffhauser massif or the Windleite east of Auleben .

Except for a small part, it is completely submerged. It has been known as a small cave since 1928. The cave was drained in October 1988 due to the massive lowering of the karst water level caused by copper slate mining near Sangerhausen . Then the entire cave was inspected. Huge halls and tall domes that were larger than the Great Dome of the Home Throat were discovered.

The mining company itself was barely able to lift the mass of water. There were other problems with the high salt content of the water. So the lowering of the karst water level had to be stopped for cost reasons. The cave was flooded again in just a few weeks. In addition, water from the Kelbra reservoir seeped into the cave. The cave entrance was closed after the flooding.
