Heringen Castle

The city of Heringen / Helme is a rural community in the Thuringian district of Nordhausen .

location

Heringen is located on the southern edge of the Golden Aue , between the Südharz and Windleite . The district town of Nordhausen is about 15 km to the northwest . The helmets flow through the city . To the north-east of Heringen, the water-rich Zorge flows into the Helmets.

history

In 1155 the place Heringen was first mentioned in a document from the Fulda monastery , located on the old military road Merseburg – Nordhausen. The town had town charter at least since 1327, when it was mentioned as a town in that year. In 1406 and 1407 the city was besieged by an imperial army without success.

As Dietrich IX. Count zu Hohnstein (line Hohnstein-Kelbra-Heringen) died in 1417 without male descendants, the city and the office of Heringen fell in part to the Counts of Schwarzburg and the Counts of Stolberg after an inheritance dispute . As a result of the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the domain and Heringer Castle became royal Prussian property.

On June 27, 1590, the arable town of Heringen burned down almost completely. In 1590 the herring fire was so cruel that in three hours neither house nor barn or stables could be seen and everything was cleared away in such a way that not one car full of wood could be gathered. In addition to the parish churches, town hall, parish and school buildings, all the town's houses burned down except for six small Heusslein . And to lament that much more, fifteen people, eight of whom were choked to death in cellars and vaults, three were burned like fire burns, two even burned to ashes, but two of them died of great pain, soon afterwards.

In July 1626 the plague broke out in Windehausen, killing 283 people. In the same year 452 people died of the disease in Heringen. The town was largely spared from the devastation of the Thirty Years' War , which was largely due to the fact that Countess Clara von Schwarzburg held Heringen as a widow's residence from 1597 to 1658. Her energetic demeanor and the fact that her brother Georg was commander in chief of the Swedish troops in the Lower Saxony district secured her the support of the Saxon elector.

During the Second World War , 110 prisoners of war from France and 400 concentration camp inmates from Dora-Mittelbau , who were housed in their own Heringen concentration camp, had to do forced labor in agriculture and in the expansion of the Sangerhausen-Nordhausen railway line.

On December 1, 2010, the city of Heringen / Helme and the communities of Auleben , Hamma , Uthleben and Windehausen merged to form the new rural community of Heringen / Helme. As a result, the number of inhabitants more than doubled, and the urban area was more than three times as large. At the same time, the administrative community Goldene Aue was dissolved and Heringen became a fulfilling community for the communities Urbach and Görsbach .
