Hohenstein is a municipality in the district of Nordhausen , Thuringia , which was named after the former county of Hohenstein .

The community of Hohenstein consists of the following districts:
- Branderode
- Holbach
- Klettenberg , founded with the construction of Klettenberg Castle in 1087, seat of the municipal administration
- Liebenrode (with the hamlet of Steinsee , which was incorporated on July 1, 1950 )
- Limlingerode
- Mackenrode , first mentioned in a document in 977

- Schiedungen , with the Pfaffenstock homestead

history
The community of Hohenstein emerged on October 18, 1996 from the Grenzland administrative community , which was founded in 1991 and whose nine former member communities are now districts of the community of Hohenstein.
During the Second World War , at least 100 prisoners of war as well as women and men from Poland , France and the Soviet Union had to do forced labor : in Klettenberg on Gut Hickethier and in Börgardt's gypsum factory as well as in the agriculture of Liebenrode-Steinsee, Limlingerode, Schiedungen and Mackenrode. Since 1944, 300 prisoners had to work in a Dora-Mittelbau concentration camp external unit to build the Helmetalbahn .

Wind turbines
Approximately 1,000 m west of Limlingerode (early 2011) five wind turbines (“light wind systems”) with a hub height of 100 m and a total height of 150 m are planned. A “Citizens' Initiative for Landscape Protection” has been formed against their establishment. She justifies her protest with the preservation of the aesthetics of the landscape and bird protection.
