Gottlieb August Spangenberg (1704–1792)

August Gottlieb Spangenberg (born July 25, 1704 in Klettenberg , County of Hohenstein ; † September 18, 1792 in Berthelsdorf , Electorate of Saxony ) was the second founder of the Evangelical Brotherhood . He was generally called "Brother Joseph" precisely because he - like Joseph in the First Book of Moses of the Bible - took care of his brothers.

Life

Spangenberg studied theology at the University of Jena and was employed as an adjunct at the theological faculty of the University of Halle in 1732 . As such, Spangenberg was appointed to the Francke Foundations and worked there as inspector of the orphanage .

After he was expelled from Halle on the orders of the king in 1733 , Spangenberg joined the Brethren and undertook several mission trips through Europe and the English colonies in America over the next few years. In 1744 the Brothers Unity appointed Spangenberg to be bishop and in 1762, after Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf's death, he became his successor.

August Gottlieb Spangenberg died at the age of 88 on September 18, 1792 in Berthelsdorf near Herrnhut .
