history
The village was first mentioned in a document on May 18, 876. Around this time the place belonged to the possessions of the Counts of Klettenberg. Around 1253, a Klettenberg count gave the Walkenried monastery a courtyard and garden in Branderode. The abandoned church was then given to the monastery . Thereafter, the Counts of Hohnstein were owners until the last Count died in 1593. Even later, the ownership changed continuously. Branderode had a manor. 1840–1870 was the heyday of home weaving and linen weaving. The gypsum quarry, opened in 1889, is still in production today, but geographically it is now part of Walkenried . In addition, the place was and is still characterized by agriculture. In the 1950s, the forced collectivization of the farms took place.
The once independent municipality of Branderode belonged to the Grenzland administrative community from 1991 to 1996 . With the dissolution of this on October 17, 1996, the member communities were merged to form the community of Hohenstein.
