Christian Wiese

Christian Wiese (born October 28, 1961 in Bonn ) is a German Protestant theologian and Judaist .

Life

Christian Wiese studied Protestant theology at the Universities of Tübingen and Bonn . The first theological exam in 1989 was followed by postgraduate studies in Jewish studies at the University for Jewish Studies in Heidelberg from 1990 to 1992 . a. with Heinz-Eduard Tödt . In 1997 he received his doctorate from the University of Frankfurt am Main . In between he completed the vicariate in Bonn-Beuel and Oberkassel from 1993 to 1997 and passed the second theological exam at the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland .

Wiese then went back to research at the Salomon Ludwig Steinheim Institute for German-Jewish History at the University of Duisburg-Essen . In 1999 he became a research assistant at the Chair of Jewish Studies at the University of Erfurt and went to Canada as a visiting professor in 2003, to the USA in 2004 and to Trinity College , Dublin in 2005 .

In 2006 he completed his habilitation in religious studies and Jewish studies at the University of Erfurt and was appointed private lecturer . From 2007 to 2010 he was director of the Center for German-Jewish Studies and professor of Jewish history at the University of Sussex . Since October 2010 he has held the Martin Buber Professorship for Jewish Religious Philosophy at the University of Frankfurt am Main.

Wieses research deals with the Jewish philosophy of religion of the modern age, the Holocaust , anti-Semitism research , Judeo-Christian relations and Zionism . Wiese has published on Hans Jonas , Robert Weltsch , David Einhorn and Saul Friedländer . Together with Michael Brocke , he researches the historian Raphael Straus .
