geography

location

Harztor is located in the far north of Thuringia, here is the northernmost point of the Free State. The community is located about nine kilometers north of the district town of Nordhausen . Neighboring communities in Thuringia are Ellrich and Nordhausen. In the north of the community, Oberharz am Brocken joins and in the east, Südharz , both in Saxony-Anhalt .

Community structure

The rural community consists of the districts:

history

Evangelical Church of St. Johannis-Pauli in Niedersachswerfen (Harz Gate)

Originally there were plans to merge all six communities of the administrative community Hohnstein / Südharz into one rural community. After reservations in the Neustadt / Harz municipality, the municipal councils of Ilfeld and Niedersachswerfen pushed ahead with the idea of forming a rural municipality from just two municipalities from January 2011. On March 30, 2011, the Lower Saxony municipal council approved the merger agreement, followed by the Ilfeld municipal council on April 5, 2011.

The name of the new rural community was originally intended to be Hohnstein . It was later changed to Südharz . Because the name was identical to the municipality of Südharz (Saxony-Anhalt), this name was also rejected by the Thuringian Ministry of the Interior and the double name Ilfeld-Niedersachswerfen was introduced into the legislative process. In a citizen survey, the majority of the residents of the two communities spoke out in favor of the name Harztor . The merger was originally supposed to take place on December 1, 2011, but was postponed for a month.

Incorporations

On July 6, 2018, the communities Harzungen, Herrmannsacker and Neustadt / Harz were incorporated, whereby the administrative community Hohnstein / Südharz was dissolved.
