Birkenmoor is a converted to Schullandheim former hunting lodge north of the hamlet of Ilfeld the rural community Harztor in the district of Nordhausen in Thuringia .
geography
It is located in a clearing in the middle of the forest and is connected to federal highway 4 via forest paths at Netzkater . The settlement, which consists of only a few houses, is located on a high plateau that drops not far northeast to the valley of the nearby Bere river . There are several ponds in the area that gave the Great Pond Valley its name, which begins at birch bog. The forests around Birkenmoor are a red deer settlement area.
history
On January 24, 1286 the first documentary mention of the forest place Birkenmoor took place. The military road from Nordhausen to Wernigerode , which was important in the Middle Ages, led via the former Birkenmoor forest farm; it was known as the “Alter Houweg” and one of the few road connections across the central Harz Mountains. It ran from Nordhausen via Kloster Himmelgarten , Steigerthal, Buchholz, Birkenmoor, Hasselfelde and Elbingerode to Wernigerode. Count Heinrich II of Hohnstein sold or gave away the Waldhof to what was then the Ilfeld Monastery , which converted it into a farm (and hospital?).
