Sophienhof is a district of the Harztor rural community in the Nordhausen district in Thuringia .

Geographical location

Gasthaus Ziegenalm in Sophienhof

The village of Sophienhof is located in the Hohnstein Forest, which once belonged to the Counts of Stolberg , in the far north of Thuringia, only 1 km from the state border with Saxony-Anhalt and 6 km from the state border with Lower Saxony . The place can only be reached by motor vehicle via side roads from Rothesütte or from the federal road 81 between Hasselfelde and Ilfeld . Otherwise, several hiking trails lead from the surrounding towns to Sophienhof.

Sophienhof also has a stop on the Harzquerbahn , which is located around 800 m north in the forest away from the village.

history

The place probably originated in the 17th century from a collection of huts used by forest workers and was first mentioned in 1645 (under a different name). Count Christian Ernst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode inherited the County of Wernigerode and the Hohnstein Forest in 1710 . In 1712 he married Sophie Charlotte Countess zu Leiningen-Westerburg , after whose name the village, which until then had been called Schmerplatz , was renamed Sophienhof in 1720 . After own preaching posts had been established in Rothesütte and Sophienhof in 1734, a small church was built in Sophienhof, which, like the church in neighboring Rothesütte, fell into disrepair due to its location near the inner-German border and was demolished in the 1960s. Its bell, cast in 1742, has been preserved and is in a belfry in the cemetery. In 1747 Hans Dietrich von Zanthier was appointed count forest and hunting master based in Sophienhof. A memorial stone commemorates him.

Sophienhof was incorporated into the Ilfeld community in 1972. As part of Ilfeld, it has belonged to the newly founded Harztor community since January 1st, 2012.
