Hans Dietrich von Zanthier (born September 17, 1717 in Görzig , † November 30, 1778 in Wernigerode ) was a German forester and hunter. He was Graflich-Stolbergischer Oberforst- und Jägermeister who gave forest lessons.

life and career

He comes from the Anhalt noble family Zanthier and was the youngest of eight children of the Saxon land and district tax collector Heinrich Dietrich von Zanthier (1676–1729), landlord of Salzfurth , Kapelle and Thalheim , and his first wife Christine Anna Eleonore von Bodenhausen (1683–1718 ) from Görzig. He lost both parents at an early age and grew up with his cousin von Bodenhausen in Burgkemnitz .

Through the mediation of the Court Marshal of Polenz, Zanthier came to the Duke of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel in 1732 at the age of 15 as a personal page . Here he completed an apprenticeship as a hunter in the Wolfenbüttler Forest, before training as a hunting page to the forester Johann Georg von Langen in Blankenburg two years later . In 1737 he accompanied Langen to Norway, where he was supposed to set up a forest administration. Zanthier stayed there for nine years and learned how to measure, classify, map and assess forests and how to use them as planned.

In 1740 he was a wood forester and royal Danish hunting squire. In 1746 both worked on the establishment and surveying of the forests in Braunschweig's Weser district. Count Christian Ernst zu Stolberg-Wernigerode appointed him in 1747 as a forest and hunting master with his office in Sophienhof. A year later, in 1748, the appointment as chief forest and hunter master came with the overall supervision for the entire Wernigeröder and Hohenstein forest property (16,000 ha). His office was now the Waldhof in Ilsenburg . Here, between 1763 and 1765, he founded the first forestry training institute in Europe as a private person. He carried on the work of Langens, established forests and drew up operational plans. In addition, he wrote some papers on forestry, as he attributed the poor condition of the German forest areas to a lack of forest expertise. He was committed to the sustainable use and renewal of wood, among other things he prepared extensive profitability calculations and plans. His special focus was on rejuvenation. Zanthier was made an honorary member in 1776 by the Berlin Society of Friends of Natural Science .

family

Von Zanthier married on February 22, 1751 at his new place of activity Ilsenburg Luise von Schierstedt (born August 3, 1720 at Gut Benzingerode ; † June 1, 1789 in Ilsenburg), she was the daughter of the landowner Jost Friedrich von Schierstedt , landlord on Benzingerode, and Sophie Auguste von Krosigk . From 1763 Zanthier had students himself and ran his house as a private forest school.

His direct descendant was the Prussian district administrator and politician Hans Dietrich von Zanthier (1856–1925), a member of the Prussian manor house .
