Walther Grosse (lawyer)

Walther Grosse (born March 27, 1880 in Schauen ; † September 27, 1943 in Wernigerode ) was a German lawyer and regional historian.

Life

After studying at the University of Göttingen , Grosse first worked as a trainee lawyer in Halberstadt and then as an assessor in Quedlinburg , before becoming a magistrate in the district town of Wernigerode in 1915. Here he met the archivist and historian Eduard Jacobs , through whom he established a close relationship with the Harz Association for History and Antiquity , which from then on determined his future life. Grosse became the first chairman of this association. He held this office until the end of his life. At the same time he was a member of the historical commission and the monuments commission of the Prussian province of Saxony . As a lawyer he was a member of the National Socialist Lawyers' Association .

At the end of 1941, Grosse surgically removed his right eye because a tumor had formed on the inner wall of the eye.

Appreciation

In 1990 a street in Stadtfeld was named after him in his hometown of Wernigerode. Furthermore, the library of the Harz Association for History and Archeology in the Harz Library in Wernigerode bears the name Walther Grosse Library with around 2000 books .
