Looking is a district of the town of Osterwieck in the Harz district in Saxony-Anhalt .

Geographical location

The place is located in the northern Harz foreland not far from the Ilse , south of Osterwieck . From there, a connecting road leads through the village and the Schauener Holz to Stapelburg .

history

Schauen was first mentioned in a document on June 4, 973, when Emperor Otto II confirmed the possession of the Archdiocese of Magdeburg zu Scaun in pago Hardago (Schauen in the Harzgau). The place name could come from the ahd. Scouwa "looking, the sight" or from the ahd. Scuwo "shadow, shady location".

In 1124 a Lothar ministerial Ricberto de Scowen is mentioned. In 1200 Herwicus de Scouwen exchanged five hooves in Wester-Schauen with the Walkenried monastery , on this basis and further acquisitions, Schauen became a grangie , a monastic farm. Within 120 years the Walkenried Monastery succeeded in uniting Schauen with its surroundings in a closed territory of about 10 km² in size with all rights in its hands. During the Walkenried period, the Bruchschauen area was called desolate from 1321 and Wester-Schauen was called Mönchschauen from 1261. The Grangie shows reached their best time and greatest extent from 1321. The Counts of Wernigerode exercised the patronage of the Grangie shows since 1325.

BW

In 1530, Schauen came to the Counts of Stolberg and in 1616 to the cathedral chapter of Halberstadt . In 1648 it came to Braunschweig-Lüneburg as an imperial fiefdom . In 1689, the Hanoverian Chamber President Otto Grote , who was promoted to imperial baron that same year , acquired the Schauen estate. The former free imperial rule of Schauen, which was not assigned to any imperial district, fell to the Kingdom of Westphalia in 1807 at the request of the local residents through mediation and, after this kingdom was dissolved in 1815, to the administrative district of Magdeburg of the Prussian province of Saxony . In 1818, there was a manor (owned by Grote), 80 houses, 524 inhabitants, a church, an estate sheep farm, an estate forestry, an inn, a water mill and a post mill. The Freiherren Grote remained in possession of the Schauen estate until 1945. Already on September 30, 1928 the manor district of Schauen was merged with the rural community of Schauen.

On January 1, 2010, the previously independent communities of Schauen, Aue-Fallstein , Berßel , Bühne , Lüttgenrode , Rhoden and Wülperode merged with the city of Osterwieck to form the new city of Osterwieck.
