Harz library Wernigerode

The Harz Association for History and Archeology , which was founded in Wernigerode on April 15, 1868 , set up a club library. The aims of this initiative included the promotion of Harz historical research and the collection of relevant publications on the topic of the Harz Mountains. While in the first decades the holdings were expanded mainly through gifts, exchanges of letters and the takeover of some bequests, after the Second World War the remaining holdings of the resin department of the expropriated Fürstlich Stolberg-Wernigerödische library and parts of the former Wernigerode high school library were taken over into the holdings.

The hive-off of the Harz library to the Harz Museum Wernigerode in 1955 led to an expansion of the geological , floristic and mining literature in particular . In accordance with the growing importance of research into the history of the Harz, the Harz library was staffed full-time with a specialist from 1981. Missing resin literature was now consistently supplemented by purchases from private owners and second-hand bookshops.

The spin-off of the Harz library from the museum and the connection to the city library with the status of a special department in 1992 made it possible to continuously build up the inventory through larger financial means and to develop subject-specific collections by appointing a second librarian. The opportunities opened up by the opening of the border brought with them a large number of new books, not only through purchases, but also through the transfer of the Harzverein's holdings that were collected in Braunschweig during the division of Germany, insofar as they corresponded to the collection area of the Harz library .
The most extensive addition since the library was founded is the takeover of a large part of the private library of the long-time editor of the Harz magazine and honorary chairman of the Harz Association, Mr. Karl-Wolfgang Sanders from Bad-Harzburg in 2007.

The current inventory of the Harz library comprises around 26,000 media units (books, magazines, maps, audio-visual and digital media). The main focus of the collection is literature on the city, county and district of Wernigerode; Genealogy; Mining; Geology; Travel literature; Chunks of literature; Fauna and Flora; Transportation; Fiction; Bibliographies; Regional studies and regional history of Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony. In addition, in recent years the facility has developed into an inventory center for Victor Aimé Huber ; Another special collection contains literature by and about Rudolf Prietze .

The Harz Library publishes an annual selection list of new acquisitions . On March 25, 1999, the separate listing of the books of the Harz Association in the Walther-Grosse Library , agreed between the city of Wernigerode and the Harz Association, was implemented.
