Walter Möllenberg

Walter Möllenberg (born June 1, 1879 in Warsleben , † December 29, 1951 in Heiligenstadt ) was a German archivist and historian .

Life

As the son of a secondary school teacher, he attended high school in Stendal . From 1899 he studied history, German studies, philosophy, economics and Latin. At the University of Halle Möllenberg 1902 to Dr. phil. PhD. He then worked as a volunteer assistant at the State Archives in Magdeburg and Marburg.

In 1905 he went to Eisleben for a year as archivist for the later Mansfeld AG . He then worked as an unskilled worker and assistant at state archives in Münster and Königsberg, before he was appointed state archivist at the Magdeburg State Archive in 1912.

Since he saw no prospects of promotion in Magdeburg, after the retirement of the princely archivist Eduard Jacobs, he applied for his position in Wernigerode , which, however, was refused. In 1923 he was promoted to head of the Prussian State Archives in Magdeburg. In this management position he joined the NSDAP in 1933 , which at the end of December 1945 led to his dismissal for political reasons. His actual resignation did not take place until the end of January 1946, at that time he was already over 66 years old. His successor was Lotte Knabe as acting director of the archive .

Since 1937 Möllenberg taught historical auxiliary sciences at the University of Halle. The following year he was appointed honorary professor there in 1938.

Walter Möllenberg headed the Historical Commission for the Province of Saxony for many years.
