Count Botho zu Stolberg-Wernigerode (born May 4, 1805 in Gedern , † August 4, 1881 in Ilsenburg ) was a German historian and castle researcher .

Life

He was the third-born son of Hereditary Count Henrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode and Jenny born. Princess of Schönburg-Waldenburg . After the education by private tutors and educational trips, which he undertook from 1817, Count Botho attended the Blochmann Institute in Dresden from 1821 . He then served two years in the Guard Dragon Regiment in Berlin and from 1826 went to Heidelberg University . He undertook a brief interlude in administrative service with the Prussian government in Düsseldorf .

In 1839 he received the administration of the Hessian rule Gedern from his father Henrich . With the death of his eldest brother Hermann in 1841, his father from Hessen called him back to the county of Wernigerode . After Henrich's death he took over the affairs of government as guardian of the minor Otto zu Stolberg-Wernigerode until 1858.

During this time he was one of the supporters of the General Association of German History and Antiquity Associations and the Germanic Museum in Nuremberg , which was founded in 1852 and to which he bequeathed his extensive collections and drawings on castle history in German-speaking countries after his death in 1881. In 1868 he was one of the founders of the Harz Association for History and Archeology, of which he was chairman for ten years.

He spent the last years of his life in Ilsenburg Castle , where he pursued his passion for collecting and worked scientifically. His research focus was the Middle Ages, but also the recent past, especially that of his house, as whose living chronicle he could be considered .

In 1883 his story of the Stolberg family appeared in the Middle Ages and two years later the Regesta Stolbergica .

family

On August 15, 1843, Count Botho Adelheid, born Countess zu Erbach-Fürstenau, married the daughter of Albrecht zu Erbach-Fürstenau . The marriage remained childless.

Honors

From July 8 to November 7, 2010, the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg organized an exhibition "Views of the Castle" with drawings and watercolors from the holdings of Count Botho zu Stolberg-Wernigerode and Karl August von Cohausen .
