Hoppenstedt is a district of the city of Osterwieck in the northern Harz foreland . Osterwieck is about 4.5 kilometers south-east, and it is about 3 kilometers to the Lower Saxony state border.
Geographical location
The place is below the Kleiner Fallstein on the right bank of the Ilse . The terrain rises from around 100 meters in the valley to almost 180 meters. On the northern edge of the village there is an abandoned limestone quarry, which was operated from 1905 to 1972 and is now a natural monument. Just to the east is the Kleiner Fallstein nature reserve , which was designated in 1961 .
history
In the Middle Ages, Hoppenstedt belonged to the Halberstadt diocese and was first mentioned in 1201 as the Hopelenstide . In 1235 the place is mentioned as Hoppelenstede and in 1310 as Hoppenstede . The part of the name Hoppen - could come from the short name Hoppo / Hoppilo to the full name Hugibald "der Geisteskühne".
At the beginning of the 14th century, the von Berwinkel family was wealthy with episcopal fiefs and shares in the mill in the village. The Stötterlingenburg monastery in Hoppenstedt was sold to the Dukes of Braunschweig by the Regensteiners in 1343 . Bishop Ludwig von Halberstadt pledged Hoppenstedt including Wülperode in 1363 to the von der Gowische family, Bishop Albrecht III. gave the places to the von Rössing family in 1383 ; whose contract was renewed several times until 1412. The von Berwinkel family remained owners of their fiefdoms until the family died out in 1492.
Officially Hoppenstedt belonged to Wülperode from time immemorial; the patronage of the church was still owned by the Dompropstei in Halberstadt in 1564 . In the church there is a valuable carved altar from the end of the 15th century. In 1564 Hoppenstedt had 29 landlords and around 1900 there were around 230 residents with main occupation in agriculture. Hoppenstedt was an independent municipality until July 1, 1950 and was then incorporated into Bühne .
On January 1, 2010, Bühne merged with seven other communities to form the new town of Osterwieck.
Culture
The Evangelical Church of Hoppenstedt is centrally located in the village and directly on the main street. In front of it there is a memorial for the 14 people who died in the First and 10 in the Second World War .
traffic
The state road 87 from Osterwieck to the Lower Saxony state border and the district road 1342 run through Hoppenstedt .
From 1908 to 1971 Hoppenstedt was a stopping point for passenger traffic on the Wasserleben – Börßum railway line , which was interrupted by the division of Germany, so that Hoppenstedt had been the final stop since 1961. Freight traffic was discontinued in 1976 and the route has since been dismantled.
