Ludwig von Meißen (born February 25, 1341 at the Wartburg , † February 17, 1382 in Calbe (Saale) ) was Archbishop and Elector of Mainz .

He was the fourth son of Margrave Friedrich II of Meissen and his wife Mathilde , a daughter of Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian .

Life

Ludwig became Bishop of Halberstadt (1357-1366) at the age of 17 - not least because of his origins . He was then first bishop of Bamberg (1366-1374), then archbishop of Mainz (1373-1381) and finally archbishop of Magdeburg (1381-1382). He was one of the two opponents during the Mainz schism from 1373-1381.

After the death of Archbishop Johann von Luxemburg-Ligny in 1373, a part of the Mainz cathedral chapter elected the 20-year-old Bishop of Speyer, Adolf von Nassau , as administrator of the archbishopric. Pope Gregory XI. however, at the request of Emperor Karl IV , appointed Ludwig von Meißen instead as archbishop. There were armed conflicts that lasted for years, particularly in Thuringia and Eichsfeld in Mainz . The Emperor, his son Wenzel , the three Margraves of Meißen (Ludwig's brothers) and Landgrave Heinrich II of Hesse seized Ludwig's side. For his part, Adolf von Nassau received support from Duke Otto von Braunschweig-Göttingen , Count Johann von Nassau, and Count Heinrich VI. von Waldeck and Count Gottfried VIII von Ziegenhain . Neither of the two rivals was able to prevail decisively, so that the split in the Mainz Erzstuhl continued.

Only after the death of Pope Gregory XI. In 1378, which was followed by the so-called Great Occidental Schism , an agreement was reached in 1381 regarding the Mainz Archbishopric. The antipope Clement VII confirmed Adolf von Nassau as Archbishop of Mainz in 1379 and appointed him administrator of Speyer in 1380 . When King Wenzel then recognized Adolf's appointment, Ludwig renounced Mainz in 1381 after Pope Urban VI. to compensate for the Archbishop of Magdeburg . He went to Magdeburg, but died in February 1382 in Calbe an der Saale.

He was buried in Magdeburg Cathedral .
