Life
Before taking over the government, Heinrich made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1356 . After his return, he had Landau Castle rebuilt. He lived there at first until he later moved to Waldeck Castle .
After his marriage in 1363 he became his father's co-regent. In 1366 he went with a large troop against the city of Korbach to punish them for disobedience. He took the city and took hostages with him to Landau. After long negotiations, the city had to submit. Later, his behavior towards Korbach was quite benevolent: he granted the citizens numerous rights and, for example, allowed them to fortify the city.
As his mother's heir, he was also a candidate for taking over the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg . After the death of Wilhelm II of Braunschweig-Lüneburg , a delegation from the Braunschweig-Lüneburg provincial estates traveled to Waldeck to propose rule to Heinrich, but when the embassy heard of his tough crackdown on Korbach, they left again immediately.
In 1370 Heinrich transferred his part to the Nordenau Castle , as well as the Bigge, Rüdenberg and Olsberg estates and other rights (such as Medelon ) to the von Gaugreben family . In 1371 he made an alliance with Landgrave Heinrich II of Hesse . He joined the Westphalian Peace Alliance in 1374.
During his reign he took part in numerous feuds and other disputes. He was involved in the sieges of Kassel twice . In alliance with Landgrave Heinrich II, he was allied in the fight against the robber barons of Padberg .
Heinrich died of the plague and was buried in the grave chapel of St. Nicholas in the Marienthal monastery in Netze . After his death the county was divided by his sons into a Landau line under Adolf and a Waldeck line under Heinrich.
