Adolf III. (Waldeck)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Adolf III. (* 1362 ; † April 19, 1431 ) was Count of Waldeck zu Landau from 1397 to 1431 . He was the founder of the older Waldeck-Landau line of the Waldeck family .

Life

Adolf was a son of Count Heinrich VI. and his wife Elisabeth von Berg. His older brother was Heinrich VII von Waldeck. In 1387 Adolf married Agnes von Ziegenhain , daughter of Count Gottfried VIII von Ziegenhain. The son and heir Otto emerged from the marriage. Adolf lived with his family at Landau Castle, which his father had assigned to him, and stayed there after his father's death in 1397 and the division of the county into the lines of Waldeck and Landau.

Much of his reign was marked by the arguments with his brother. He did not agree that Heinrich had destroyed the previous alliance with the Landgraviate of Hesse in 1400 by attacking the area around Kassel . As a result, his part of the country was also attacked by Hessian troops. Adolf wanted to restore the good relationship with Hesse. Heinrich VII published nineteen complaints against his brother in 1406 and proposed the mayors and councilors of the cities of Korbach and Niederwildungen as arbitrators . In return, Adolf accused his brother of having sold the Schartenberg to the Archbishop of Cologne without authorization. Attempts to come to an agreement between the brothers were unsuccessful for years.

It was not until 1421 that, through the mediation of Count Johann II von Ziegenhain , Adolf's brother-in-law, a comparison was made between the two brothers and their sons Otto and Wolrad . The division of the county was confirmed, but it was also determined that neither side could sell or pledge any part of the country without the knowledge and consent of the other side. The documents and fiefdoms that were valid for both sides were to be collected in a joint archive at Waldeck Castle . Failed fiefdoms should revert to the entire house. The spiritual benefits should also be given jointly by both sides. The castle men and councilors should investigate and resolve any conflicts. In the following years this contract was renewed and refined.
