Netze is the fifth largest district of Waldeck in terms of population in the north Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg .

location

The place between Waldeck , Freienhagen and Bad Wildungen on the federal highway 485 is a clustered village and until 1914 was larger than today's core town Waldeck. Even today there are numerous well-preserved half-timbered houses in the town center, which is located on the Netze stream .

history

The place was in the border area between the language areas Low German and Middle German .

The name Netze was first mentioned in a document in 1216, after the gender of the same name, "those of Netze"; an Andreas von Netze is a witness in a document. The sex was resident in nets for centuries and was wealthy. As ministerial and tithe free , they were in the service of the Counts of Waldeck . There are indications that they were already resident as ministerials of the Counts of Schwalenberg before the monastery was founded (1228) at the time of the first Romanesque church . The family was last mentioned in 1577: the squire Heinrich von Netze accompanied Count Daniel von Waldeck on his return from a campaign in France. It can be assumed that the sex died out afterwards in the male line.

In 1228 the brothers Volkwin IV. Von Schwalenberg and Adolf I. von Waldeck founded the Cistercian nunnery "Marienthal - In the valley of holy Maria" . It became the home monastery and burial place of the Counts of Waldeck.

Early days

Because of its favorable location in a protected valley with enough watercourses (the nets that flow into the Eder at Mehlen , the Fombach and the Meierbach) it can be assumed that people lived here as early as prehistoric times. This thesis is supported by some prehistoric finds of stone axes and stone blades that are 6,000 to 7,000 years old.

Between 1350 and 1400 , vineyards were planted south of Netze, as in Bad Wildungen . These facilities were later reforested, but the term "vineyards" has been used to this day.

Thirty Years and Seven Years' War

The Thirty Years War (1618-1648) hit the place hard due to its strategic location. Of 72 dwellings in 1618, only 22 were still habitable at the end of the war, and only 13 men lived in the village.

The Seven Years War was even more devastating for nets. In March 1761 there was a battle between French on the one hand and Swedish and British troops on the other at the "Schanzen am Tiergarten". Subsequently, more than 2000 French destroyed almost the entire village.

Friedrichsthal hunting lodge

In 1701, Count Friedrich Anton Ulrich von Waldeck and Pyrmont had the Friedrichsthal hunting lodge built on the northwestern edge of the Netzer zoo on the remains of a moated castle that was probably demolished at that time . At the beginning of the 19th century, the associated estate was converted into a domain . When they were divided up and resettled in 1922, the small village of Selbach was created . The former hunting lodge, which served as a manor house and later also as a holiday farm, is now privately owned and has been refurbished and renovated since 2008.

Incorporation

On October 1, 1971, the previously independent municipality of Netze was incorporated into the town of Waldeck.
