Motorcycle world championship
MotoGP class (800 cm³)
- In the MotoGP class, which was held for the first time with 800 cm³ machines, the 22-year-old Australian Casey Stoner won the first world title of his career on a Ducati . He prevails against the Spaniard Dani Pedrosa ( Honda ) and the Italian Valentino Rossi ( Yamaha ). In the constructors 'championship, Ducati wins the first constructors' title in the company's history in the motorcycle world championship ahead of Honda and Yamaha.
250 cc class
- In the 250 cm³ class, the 20-year-old Spaniard Jorge Lorenzo successfully defends the title he won last year on Aprilia ahead of the Italian Andrea Dovizioso (Aprilia) and Alex De Angelis from San Marino (Aprilia). In the constructors' championship, Aprilia prevails over Honda and KTM .

Superbike World Championship
- The Briton James Toseland wins the drivers' championship on a Honda ahead of the Japanese Noriyuki Haga ( Yamaha ) and the Italian Max Biaggi ( Suzuki ). For the 27-year-old, this is the second world title of his career in this category after 2004. In the constructors' championship, Yamaha prevailed over Honda and Ducati .

World Supersport Championship
- The 23-year-old Turkish Kenan Sofuoğlu wins the drivers' championship on a Honda ahead of the Australian Broc Parkes ( Yamaha ) and the French Fabien Foret ( Kawasaki ). In the constructors' championship, Honda beats Yamaha and Kawasaki.

- South Africa wins the Rugby Union World Cup in France .
Alpine skiing
With a lead of only 13 points, Aksel Lund Svindal wins the overall World Cup for the first time. This is the smallest point gap that has ever existed in the World Cup. In the women’s category, Austrian Nicole Hosp won the large crystal ball . The most successful participant in the World Cup was the Swede Anja Pärson with three gold, one silver and one bronze medal.
