- July 12th to July 24th - The 18th Maccabiade is held in Israel . At the largest international Jewish sporting event, 9,000 athletes from 53 nations, including Austria , Germany and Switzerland , will take part in 31 sports. The most successful nation will be Israel, ahead of the United States and Russia.
- July 16 to July 29 - The 8th World Games will take place in Kaohsiung ( Taiwan ) . Around 4800 athletes from 105 countries took part in 35 sports in the World Games. The most successful nation in the medal table is Russia, ahead of Italy and the People's Republic of China . The venue is the World Games Stadium , which was specially built for the games and has a capacity of 40,000 spectators.

- February 1 - The Pittsburgh Steelers win Super Bowl XLIII by a 27:23 in Tampa over the Arizona Cardinals .

International Formula Master
- September 20 - Swiss Fabio Leimer (Team Jenzer Motorsport ) wins the 2009 International Formula Masters season by a clear margin ahead of Russian Sergei Afansjew and Czech Josef Král (both Team JD Motorsport ). JD Motorsport (Italy) wins the team standings ahead of Jenzer Motorsport (Switzerland).

- Timo Scheider ( Audi Sport Team Abt ) from Germany wins the 2009 DTM season ahead of the British Gary Paffett ( Salzgitter AMG Mercedes (HWA) ) and Paul di Resta ( AMG Mercedes (HWA) ). Timo Scheider was able to defend the championship title he won in 2008. Salzgitter / Mercedes-Benz Bank (HWA) wins the team standings ahead of Audi Sport Team Abt .

- The 47-year-old Italian Gabriele Tarquini becomes World Touring Car Champion 2009 with a 4 point lead. Yvan Muller from France and Augusto Farfus from Brazil come in second and third . Tarquini and Muller drove for the SEAT Sport team, Farfus for BMW Team Germany . Seat (Spain) wins the constructors' championship ahead of BMW (Germany).

- January 3 to January 18 - The 30th Dakar Rally will be held in Argentina and Chile . After the rally was canceled in 2008 due to terrorist threats, it will now be held in South America instead of Africa for the first time. Giniel de Villiers and Dirk von Zitzewitz (automobile), Marc Coma (motorcycle) and Josef Macháček (quad) enter the winners' lists . Firdaus Kabirow , Ajdar Beljajew and Andreij Mokejew win the truck category .
- October 25th - World Championship Final in Great Britain . Before the twelfth and therefore final round of the 2009 World Rally Championship , which began with the Ireland Rally at the end of January, the Finn Mikko Hirvonen is one point ahead of the five-time World Champion Sébastien Loeb from France.

The Norwegian Ole Einar Bjørndalen has added four more gold medals to his collection of medals. In the women’s category, the German Kati Wilhelm achieved a double triumph over 7.5 and 15 kilometers. Wilhelm also won two silver medals, making her the second most successful participant in the World Championships in South Korea behind Bjørndalen.
In the medal table, Norway was ahead of Germany and Russia, which was under observation during the competitions in Pyeongchang for doping cases in the Russian team shortly before the World Championships.

- April 1st to April 5th - The European Diving Championship takes place in Turin .
doping
- One day before the start of the Biathlon World Championships in Pyeongchang in February , Yekaterina Jurjewa , Albina Achatowa and Dmitri Yaroshenko (all Russia) were convicted of doping after the opening of the B sample from the World Cup in Östersund in December 2008.
- The Lebanese ski racer Georges Salameh is found traces of cocaine at the world championships in Val d'Isere .
- The Russian cross-country skier Natalia Matwejewa is the World Cup in Whistler tested positive for EPO.
- After the football professionals Andreas Ibertsberger and Christoph Janker from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim appeared too late for a doping control after a game in the German Bundesliga against Borussia Mönchengladbach (1: 1) on February 7 , there were extensive discussions about this case. Eventually, the two players whose samples were negative are acquitted. Hoffenheim is sentenced to a fine.
- The Austrian triathlete Lisa Hütthaler , who was banned for two years in October 2008 for EPO doping , announced details of the allegations in her case in March 2009 .
- The German professional cyclist David Kopp was convicted of cocaine doping during a national race in Belgium on September 11, 2008.
- The Russian biathletes Andrej Prokunien (WM-4th 2001) and Veronika Timofejewa (2nd place Universiade 2003) will test positive for R-Epo doping in mid-March.
- At the national Russian indoor athletics championships in February, the 1,500 m run winner Vladimir Eschow and the 1,500 m runner Jelena Kanales were said to have tested positive for Epo.
- The Austrian cyclist Christian Pfannberger tests positive for Cera . Pfannberger had already tested positive in 2004.
- The German cyclist Stefan Schumacher is convicted of doping abuse. The Italian professional Davide Rebellin , the Olympic silver medalist in road racing, also tested positive for Cera.
- The US cyclist Tyler Hamilton was found doping for the second time since 2006 in April.
- Isabell Werth's dressage horse Whisper tests positive.
- The German speed skater Claudia Pechstein is banned due to suspicious test values.
- British show jumper Michael Whitaker's horse Tackeray tested positive for Altrenogest in June .
- In July, the Spanish cycling professionals Inigo Landaluza and Ricardo Serrano were convicted of abusing the blood doping agent Cera. The positive samples were from June.
